General Discussion Area

Hi! Meet The Gang and join the party! ... Come Right In

Next
When the face lift is complete, plans are for most every place in the Shop to have a place for relevant comments ... the featured post and all the features. It gets kinda messy and can be confusing when banter is mixed with comments relevant to some published post but this here is a special place ... here you can talk about anything, it don't have to be relevant or nothing! Anyone can start a discussion, ask questions ... join in the banter ... exchange opinions, meet new folks and make new friends!

Sometimes we'll have a suggested subject for discussion other times not ... during the face lift, it will be the currently featured post but you can speak your mind or chat about most anything. Enjoy yourself ... candy's always on the house, coffee and cokes too!

Welcome to the Old Barbershop's general discussion area where you can comment on the current post ... comment on the comments of others ... or start a discussion of your own.

This is the place to exchange opinions ... share stories, experiences, recipes ... anything on any subject you like.

We expect and encourage the sharing of ideas representing differing viewpoints and honest differences of opinion. Preaching to the choir may get lots of loud "amens" but it seldom accomplishes much more than fostering closed mindedness.

However, we do not believe in entitlement ... everything carries with it responsibility ... boorish behavior is not allowed ... no personal attacks and no offensive language.

Mama always said that most folks with whom you disagree sincerely believe their opinions to be the right ones ... if they didn't, they'd agree with you.

We're here for you ... enjoy yourself and make sure you read and click on all of our ads ... well, we're non-commercial and have no ads but you should read and click on them all the same!!

Here blogger!

On many occasions I have attempted to explain that Bob, journalist was`a character rather than a mask, primarily created in response to the behavior exhibited by some on the AJC's Braves' Beat Blog in my early days of participation.

Indeed, it was that for which I think we should all strive to be ... it wasn't me ... though I wish it had been, sans the irritating, convoluted and artificial mode of self-expression.

Here's a slightly different take on the character ... same, only different ... based upon reflection as part of a response to a recent visitor adding me as a friend. How we view things depends on the glasses we're wearing ... for those familiar with the character ... what did you think? ... the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Much of what I've written in the Shop has been family based ... it may have`sometimes seemed that the stories`were seasoned with just a pinch of intended humor and a dash of exaggeration or embellishment ... but those`who know`will attest to my adherence to the`truth, regardless of unlikely it may have seemed. It's true that I would have paid them well to so attest but the beauty is that there was no need!

Mine were good, caring parents ... I have the scars to prove it!

My father was truly well respected by all who knew him well ... and many did! His word was his bond! He worked but for one company throughout his 47 year career, going from the bottom to the top ... and though he had been retired 20 years, hundreds who had worked with him were in attendance at his funeral.

Mother never met a stranger ... and she was beloved by all who knew her well, with more good friends than most of us have acquaintances. Mama believed in people and was full of encouragement ... "be all you can be ... never give up ... you can do anything to which you set your mind ... can't never could" ... that was Mama. Most of all, she loved her kids, including her wayward eldest! Mama was my Polonius and I her Laertes.

Mama and Daddy set the bar high ... their lives truly reflected that in which they believed ... as did Carol's.

A history and political science major, Carol reported to me when I selected her to manage the Life Policyholder Service area of an insurance company for which we both worked ... it's how we met.

She was a stern taskmaster but she believed in her people and many openly cried when she joined another company after her area was repositioned under the direction of the Administrative Vice President.

Her defining characteristics were a demand for perfection, which she demanded of herself ... and always telling the truth as she saw it, even when it hurt. She was expert in her job, a true professional, but a good politician she was not.

If the truth be known, I never worked for a company ... it was against my religion ... I never worked for anybody. From my perspective, I worked with them ... more than just words, there really is a difference.

It allowed me to take ownership, at least in my own mind ... to take the initiative in identifying and solving problems ... mine was in essence a twenty-four work day. I think without exception, It was true of every job I ever had ... yes, overworked and underpaid ... understood and appreciated by few.

I got that from Daddy, methinks,

The character Bob, journalist ... if you look closely, you' may recognize him as a composite of my three heroes ... Mama, Daddy, and Carol ... seasoned`with just a pinch or dash of the real me. He was a good character of good character, not at all like fatally flawed me. Yes, it was a good character, methinks ... hard to miss with three such wonderful role models.

BOB said...

Mystic Dave, if things go as expected, the starting pitching rotation could be dominant but such things seldom do ... and that adds to the excitement, methinks!

The outfield appears to be solid too ... both offensively and defensively ... and includes bigger than life rookie Jason Heyward ... heralded as baseball's next great superstar in many quarters ... he seems to have all the tools!

Expectations are high but if should be fun, regardless of how they fare ... and certainly baseball will be a topic of frequent discussion in the Shop.

Hopefully, the Tigers will do well too ... it will make it easier to deal with one Southern Jackass if they do!

We hope everyone will join in the banter in the General Discussion Area ... even those misguided supporters of the Mets and Phils!

Of course, baseball is but one of an infinite number of things that we hope will be discussed here`in the Shop's General Discussion Area!

There are different sizes of infinity ... right now, ours is equal to one ... its ultimate size is up to our blogging family ... them what visit and join in!
Thanks again Dave!

BOB said...

I received a nice email from Matt ... offering condolences ... he's real busy and asked that I give everyone his best!

I ain't gonna do that ... John Alden or no ... instead, I'm going to eamail him and suggest he do it himself!

Though folks aren't yet joining the discussion, we are getting some traffic here in the Shop's GDA ... Mechanicsville, Va ... Marietta, Ga ... Fort Collins, Col ... Madison, Indiana ... Nairobi, Kenya ... to name a few.

Come on in, the water's fine!

BOB said...

Well, SJA should be a bit more tolerable over the weekend, as we let his Tigers win today's game played just for fun ... tossing him such bones works wonders on his disposition ... not sure why but he just thinks it's sweet feed. Being almost blind and bout stoned deaf, he often gets confused and thinks the Tigers just won the Series!

It stems from the not too distant past when Tiger fans celebrated each time they won a game ...parades and everything!

Nobody said SJA was real smart ... just that he could write real good!

BOB said...

Watching the President on TV, I just hope he's as good being a President as he is being a comedian and mocking those who oppose the things he evidently supports.

Tell hem what they want to hear an they'll follow you anywhere ... warning signs to their left, warning signs to their right ... into the valley of socialistic reform and financial ruin, rides the once mighty USA.

I always support the president, regardless of party but this non-politician sure seems quite the political Svengali, methinks.

Hopefully I'm wrong ... what do you think?

Anonymous said...

"let his Tigers win" ... Unbelievable! ...

Obama is definitely living up to at least one of his countless campaign promises --transparency-- I could see right through him from the get-go!

As a Braves fan for a lotta years, this may be the season I've been waiting for all my life.

Anonymous said...

On another note ... I'm getting tired of hearing about those two over-privileged lowlifes Tiger Woods and Jesse James entering rehab ... the purpose for their going to rehab is plainly to distract attention from the fact that they have neither morals nor self-control, and that they're unwilling to accept any scintilla of personal responsibility or accountability for their lascivious behavior ... give me a break ... rehab simply means restoration -- how can you restore something that never existed? -- such as good character and morals in Tiger Woods and Jesse James?

Anonymous said...

Rich, since I'm here and Bob is not, welcome to the Shop ... yes, the Braves do appear to have good potential for the upcoming season ... we'll see.

BOB said...

Rich, this could be it ... I hope it is as I always do this time of year but this time there seems to be some rational justification for so feeling.

I think that in recent times, there have been several really exciting seasons ... we shudda wudda, cudda won it all at least two more times during the streak.

I used to watch every inning of the All Star games and those of the post season but in recent times, the All Star game has become a joke and is of no interest ... and my season most often ends with that of the Braves.

Exceptions ... the magical finish of the Rockies, though they didn't win it all ... and Boston breaking the curse!

My favorite seasons during what is now known as the streak were in 1991 and 1993, winning the division in each year by one game ... from worst to first in '91 and winning 104 games in 1993 ... now that was exciting!

I really don't expect Chipper to be a major factor unless it's a negative one but the team looks super solid, offensively and defensively, assuming they stay healthy ... McLouth gets straightened out and they don't try too hard to hit home runs.

Of course, Heyward is a rookie and the jury is still out but he has all the tools, a rare 6 tool player with the ability to come close to realizing his potential. He should be fun to watch!

Team speed should be better ... the bench definitely will be improved, as will team chemistry! Still, there have been lots of changes over the last two years and while team chemistry will be better, its impact on team performance remains a question to be answered over a long season, with players collectively facing challenges and adversity under pressure and adversity.

The pitching has looked pretty good and could be collectively superior but a lot depends on Hudson, Lowe and Wagner being healthy and returning to form ... questions yet to be answered but what we've seen has been positive.

It'll be interesting to see if Peter's new friend "Dave" is ready and as effective as advertised!

Forget the hype, ours is a tough division though the wild card may well come from the East, especially if the top two can feast on Washington!

My three keys for team success are the same as for last year ... Bobby, Terry and Roger.

There will be many factors determining our fate in 2010 ... what will be the difference maker?

I really think it will be the improved chemistry and the positive contagion generated in the dugout as well as on the field. What say you?

I think what this blog is lacking is the inclusion of an eclectic mix of song lyrics within each post ... along with an occasional restaurant critique ... then it just might not be so lame, my man ...

BOB said...

"I'm getting tired of hearing about those two over-privileged lowlifes Tiger Woods and Jesse James entering rehab" ... I am too, especially Jesse James.

That's old news ... I'll bet the media is behind this, trying to drag old skeletons out of the closet after all this time ... why, Jesse rehabilitated his own self back before the turn of the century, changed his name and everything ... was doing okay too until the Ford affair. They got it wrong, Jesse James was a one woman man and was no low life ... if anybody was ever a low life, it was that dirty little coward Bob Ford but I don't think he was ever rehabilitated cause leopards can;t change their spots no more than tigers can change their stripes.

Maybe Tiger should follow Jesse's footsteps, change his name to Howard and start a new life somewhere selling shoes.

Now Jackasses is different!

BOB said...

You Da Boss, Herr Azel!

Anonymous said...

The asseveration has been made publicly and privately that sja is nothing more than a "reclamation project" never to be trusted ... so there just may be a smidgen of hope for Tiger and Jesse after all ... both also jackasses!

Anonymous said...

But there's no sense in pulling old skeletons out of the closet ... unless of course one has been hearing them rattling around.

BOB said...

SJA, that too is old news ... seems like our own Jimmy Smith had the same idea long ago ... others may have had his ideas since ... mine too, methinks.

Here's a new idea that might work!

We could disparage all those commenting who didn't agree with us ... my guess is that folks would really like being so recognized by the blog hosts ... most would consider it a sign of acceptance and badge of honor!

What do you think ... I wonder if it would work ... what do you think?

Your and Idiot!

BOB said...

I done said that jackasses is different ... and so is the Shop ... and it will so remain!

I liked to watch Tiger play golf but it was obvious that he was a contrived character ... a non-gentleman playing a gentleman's game ... and now he wants a mulligan! He just doesn't understand the game!

Jesse was a son of the South ... and somewhat of a Robin Hood. Any low life plagiarist what done evidently stole his good name ain't no Jesse James in my book.

BOB said...

I went to comment about uncle Virgil in sja's April Fools story ... the joke was on me ... no comments allowed.

I first thought he might be sending them here to the General Discussion Area but could find no such evidence ... that would be a good idea, methinks!

BOB said...

Goodness, no wonder Bobby liked him!

I said he was on something because he was so hyper, in his last two years withe the Braves ... but, never thought he would be a low life wife beater.

Thought he was on PEDs too

Well I guess it's hard to tell if they're not wearing their "wife beaters" ...

There's a new post in the Stall, for those who care to look ...

Matthew Collier said...

Well, here comes the prodigal. It seems like every so often I have to come in repentance for my prolonged absence from the shop. It has happened again. I have let the insanity that is life keep me from one of the things I enjoy the most, and away from some of my favorite people online.

Lately we have been watching the 80s sitcom Perfect Strangers. If you're not familiar, it features an immigrant named Balki Bartokamous (from the fictitious island of Mypos) and his American cousin Larry. Balki's style of apology is very helpful for the way I feel.

"I am dirt. I am the lowest. I am lower than a sheep's belly."

In all honesty, I do hate that I've been away and, after talking to Bob, have decided to give the ole' shop as much time as I can. From now until the end of May, I will be in the shop at least three or four times a week, and then after our high school team is finished, I will be ready to tackle the rigors of Centerfield on a daily basis.

In the meantime, Bob asked me to give the patrons an invitation. Until the end of May, why not involve the blog patrons in the updtates for Centerfield? As Centerfield is supposed to be where the up-to-date baseball news is shared, how about we open it up as a forum? Give patrons the opportunity to post rumors, transactions involving the minor leage teams, trades, etc. That way the news is updated, and I can add in family stories, recipies, and other little tidbits to help make Centerfield unique.

How about it Bob? Boss? Can I stick around a while and bring my friends?

I set out in this post to say hello and share my best wished with the blog patrons. I pray you are having a great weekend and that you know the real joy that comes from Easter. He is risen, He is risen indeed!

nothingprofound said...

Not sure where I am and what I'm doing (which is nothing unusual) but want to wish you all a Happy Holiday!

"Happy Easter" to you too Nothingprofound ... and don't be alarmed, we don't know where or who we are either ...

Anonymous said...

Matthew, you're one of us, you don't need to ask, you're always welcome here, at whatever level of participation you can muster, we all know what it's like to be pressed for time, and must take care of important priorities first ... feel free to move about the Shop as you wish, in the meantime I believe Bob is working on something so as to knock the dust off Centerfield ... so stay tuned ... "Happy Easter" one and all!

Matthew Collier said...

Thanks Boss. It's nice to be back! My sideburns were getting alarmingly long!

BOB said...

The unprofound one strikes again! For those who don't know, NothingProfound is one of a kind ... his "Out Of Context: Pieces Of a Life" is one of the best ... you'll find the link in the Shop's sidebar!

Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!

Like the sign said, you're in the old barbershop's general discussion area ... this is where we hope folks will come and comment on what they've read here in the main Shop and its connected Special Feature rooms, including TheSouthernJackass' Stall, Centerfield, Miss Carol's Salon and others.

The idea is to have one central location for comments and discussion ... and hope folks will do more than get a shave and have their hair cut when they visit the Shop ... my welcoming comment ... the very first one here ... explains it better, methinks!

Please ask questions if there's anything you don't understand ... and take issue with anything you disagree!

It ain't like school, you don't have to raise your hand for permission!

Charlie Foster knew how to cut my hair ... 'cause he was the only who ever did until I was a high school senior, but he always asked and I always told him how to do it! Told him when I didn't like my haircut too ...

We exchanged opinions on everything too... which was good, since nobody else would listen to me since I was just a kid! All the other barbers and many of the patrons joined in and enjoyed giving me hard time as I solved the world's problems, even Daddy.

Well, you can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket!

Happy Easter!!

BOB said...

"Can I stick around a while and bring my friends?" ... well now, I'll have to think about the first part just a bit but you can most certainly bring your friends, especially them what will comment, share ideas and enter into the discussions. Indeed, that's a prerequisite for allowing you back in the shop, should we so decide!!

"I am dirt. I am the lowest. I am lower than a sheep's belly" ... now I just asked SJA if we wanted somebody what was dirt and lower than a sheep's belly here in the the shop and he said it sounded like they would fit right in!

Hard to argue with the Boss on that!

I'm told that self reflection and confession are good for the soul, even for a preacher ... and those who so do should be forgiven, especially if they have a good bargaining chip ... like a lot of friends who will visit the shop and join in the doins.

The bottom line is yes, you can stick around for a while ... on probation, until your friends show up!

During the face lift, we'll run your entries through as lead posts here in the Shop ... email them to me or, better yet, just create them using the Shop's editor.

We'll add your ideas to the mix and work out the details during April ... anyone wanting to submit a post during the face lift need only to let us know and we'll do our best to facilitate that ... it's easy ... anyone can do it, even a jackass or a baby seal.

Welcome Home Matt, Happy Easter!

BOB said...

Sorry Boss, it's Butler vs Duke ... that surprised me!!

Still, being in the Final Four is hoped for by many, realized by few ... congratulations to your WV Mountaineers ... and the Spartans too!

Anonymous said...

WVU was soundly trounced & bounced! ... but Duke was in rare form tonight ... hard situation for me -- being from WV -- but always having Duke as my favorite college team ... don't tell that to Coach Huggins though!

BOB said...

Well, the Braves' opening day roster looks like this ... 12 pitchers leaving room for 13 position players, according to my math.

Of the 12, nine are right handed, including all the starters. I like our rotation but a lefty in the mix would offer some advantages, methinks.

Our Closer, Billy Wagner is left handed as are Eric O'Flaherty and Jo-Jo Reyes.

The conventional wisdom crowd seem to think that Reyes will be the odd man out when Procter is ready, but Proctor is another right handed pitcher which would make O'Flaherty the only lefty reliever, excluding Wagner.

It would be nice if Jo-Jo could be used for left handed long relief and as a spot starter against left handed dominant lineups.

The starters are Tommy Hanson, Tim Hudson, Jair Jurrjens, Kenshin Kawakami, and Derek Lowe.

The right handed relievers`are Jesse Chavez, Kris Medlen, Peter Moylan, and Takashi Saito.

The Dirty Dozen(13) includes two Catchers, seven infielders and four outfielders.

Starters
Catcher - Brian McCann
1st Base - Troy Glaus
2nd Base - Martin Prado
Short - Yunel Escobar
3rd Base - Chipper Jones
Left - Matt Diaz
Center - Nate McLouth
Right - Jason Heyward

Bench
Catcher - David Ross
Infield
Brooks Conrad
Eric Hinske
Omar Infante
Outfield - Melky Cabrera

A healthy Infante plus the addition of Conrad, Hinske and Cabrera should greatly improve our bench.

Win 162 games and we're in the playoffs! It's possible, until we lose one ... but I'd take just one more than the NL East runner up.

this journalist has been traveling extensively and has not been blogging very much. now, jimmy smith would like to wish all a happy easter!

baby seal is participating today in the annual easter egg hunt at the presbyterian church. as some will recall, there was an ugly incident a couple years back when baby seal was running (waddling) for the golden egg and, in so doing, tripped a little girl also on the way to that egg, causing her easter basket to spill its contents on the ground and drawing a huge crowd of other participants who cleaned out the little girls easter eggs on the spot and left her crying on the ground. baby seal, thereupon, offered the little girl an egg from baby seal's own easter basket and that's when the little girl burst forth in gutteral sounds not before heard at the presbyterian church and tears were running down the little girl's face and then the presbyterian minister noticed a beet writer had wandered onto the grounds and had to go over and ask the beet writer to leave. it was a memorable day for all concerned.

jimmy smith is hoping today's hunt will be unremarkable and that baby seal will be able to bring home the eggs that baby seal finds and that baby seal will be permitted to hunt easter eggs again next year at the presbyterian church.

matthew, baby seal would hunt eggs at the baptist church but those eggs come with a price. the pastor at the baptist church will not let seals participate in the hunt even when dressed as a small baseball fan. in baby seal's stead this journalist must hunt the eggs at the baptist church and that is not productive because jimmy smith has a trick knee and some of the kids know this and will take out this journalist on the way to an egg. baby seal comes home with too few eggs that way and misses out on the excitement of the hunt.

jimmy smith will reveal all about the methodist easter egg hunt in a future post.

Happy Easter Jimmy Smith, and Baby Seal too!

Do Methodists really hunt Easter Eggs?

Jimmy, as you can see, the shop is getting a face lift ... it'll be a little slower than we'd like as I'll be trying to relocate in the Chattanooga area, so as to be nearer to family ... My sister's there and it's where my folks are buried, and now Carol too ... my brother's down the line in Roswell but with his wife's folks living in Chattanooga, we'll see them often.

I want your serious input ... ideas, comments and stuff like that ... as to how we can improve upon the shop ... and what we might do to encourage greater participation from our expanding audience.

Lots of visitors, more each day ... few who comment ... and fewer still who actively participate in the discussions.

I guess that's a problem faced by many and effectively addressed by few ... it's up to us to give folks reason to want to actively participate ... if we do, they will!

SJA's Stall suffers somewhat from the same problem ... currently, it's the only Special Feature that can be easily accessed from within the Shop's lobby ... Centerfield and others will reappear as we proceed with the face lift.

Visitors to the Stall, "TheSouthernJackass" to some, have one click access to the Shop and our General Discussion Area ... and many have already visited both.

I would really like for you, Matt, Baby Seal and those who enjoy the Shop to return the favor ... seems like the Boss puts up a new story just about every day ... his prolific pen never runs out of that special ink that's pure SJA!

Leave comments too ... show them how it's done, oldbarbershop style!

It's important ... us barbers have to support each other ... just common courtesy ... and besides, they're dang good stories. If you don't, you won't know to respond when folks drop in here and comment on them.

For those unfamiliar with the honorable and esteemed journalist Jimmy Smith ... you can get the real skinny by clicking on "Plato's Place ... in the opening welcome greeting as you enter theoldbarbershop!

Here's some "Man In Black" song lyrics by john R. Cash ... just might liven things up a bit and attract some bloggers ...

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

Boss, I may have misspoken myself as I know that Jews don't celebrate Easter ...

I was trying to ask if they take a position on the assertion of Jesus' resurrection by his followers ... consider it a hoax ... offer counter proof ... or just don't believe it happened.

The intended context was really ... "eye witnesses" that is, those involved, so to speak ... the Jews and Romans ... One would think that surely it would have been in what they then considered their best interests to refute, discredit and/or disprove the assertion of Jesus' resurrection, if they so could.

That was our preacher's message when I was a boy ... and like I said, I've heard it since.

Anonymous said...

But have you ever had a shrimp cocktail or shrimp sandwich at Captain Benjamin's Calabash Seafood Restaurant? ... in Myrtle Beach??

Anonymous said...

Bob, I believe that Jews and Romans alike considered the resurrection of Christ to be a hoax, including some of Jesus' closest followers ... remember doubting Thomas when Christ appeared in the upper room before his ascension? ... that's why a huge stone was rolled in front of the doorway to the tomb, they feared his followers would steal his body and claim that he had indeed risen from the dead ... of which was a popular belief among many at the time ... the Jews believed Jesus to be Christ the Son of God even less than did the Romans ...

BOB said...

SJA, that's my belief as well ... Thomas had a distinct advantage, part of my reason for wanting to read his writings which weren't among those included in the New Testament.

As with the rest, it's my understanding that he doubted no more!

Then use Centerfield's Special Features menu tp go to one of the other Special Features ... it shouldn't matter which ... when there, use their menu to go back to centerfield.

report your findings back here in the general discussion area.

Thanks!

BOB said...

Oops, don't go to the Stall from Centerfield ... the Boss done disabled the Special Features menu during the face lift so you can't get back.

BOB said...

Part of the reason for the face lift was that Carol's final months forced us to leave the Shop in abeyance ... and many of the Special Features are time sensitive, like Centerfield and Gone but not forgotten.

She believed in the Shop with its characters of character and she wanted it fixed up right!

Carol liked the Central Discussion Area where folks could talk to anybody about anything ... and to anything about anybody.

Though we never really did the "Gone - Not Forgotten" feature justice, it was special to us both and we want it to continue, me and Miss Carol ... for she's still in her Salon and will never be forgotten here in the Shop.

We know everyone is busy ... but it's our wish that both Matt and Jimmy Smith play a greater role, as much as their schedules permit ... Matt already knows but she often talked about that.

About the Ugandan journalist ... "he's funny ... folks like to read what John and Jimmy write"

Carol would always read Miss Rosa Lynn's comments aloud, over and over again ... Baby Seal's too ... laugh and laugh.

She really liked bantering with them ... she'd sometimes mutter aloud ... "I can't believe it, I've been writing to a baby seal!

Miss Rosa Lynn was special to her ... more than just that drawl, methinks ... they usually saw eye to eye.

One of her best friends when we worked for AFLAC was one of Jimmy Carter's neighbors and close family friend. Carol answered the phone one day during his presidency ... "hi, this is Jimma ...is Susan there?' ... she did better than would have I ... "just a second, Mr. President."

Not so long ago, she said that she thought we had finally turned the corner but it bothered her deeply when young Ashu disappeared ... we truly fear that some great misfortune befell him. He too is not to be forgotten.

Excuse the journey ... it's Easter and my best girl is with me, squeezing my hand and giving me thumbs up!

Happy Easter, Sweetheart

Miss Rosa Lynn, where have you been?

We've missed you ... you do truly make it a very special Easter!!

I'm with you regarding McLouth ... his Hammy and his self confidence too! Maybe Bobby read that book about getting back up on the horse, but self imposed pressure has turned many a budding star into a salesman ... for both physical and above the neck reasons, methinks.

We all know what Frenchy went through ... what do you think of his replacement, number 22?

BOB said...

Thanks everyone for the help with Centerfield ... but, you're telling me my changes didn't work!!!

What I intended was`for you to use the Special Feature Link List to go to a different feature, any one of them other than the Stall ... for example, Carol's Salon.

That should work as expected ... then use the Special Feature Link List or table in the Feature to go back to Centerfield.

Then report back the result here in the discussion area. If it works as intended, your report would be different, methinks!

Please try again ... it's like an Easter Egg Hunt ... whoever finds the egg gets an email attachment containing a genuine black and white copy of a photocopy of one of Lew's discards as a prize!

Go for it!

Matthew Collier said...

Hey Bob. I accessed Centerfield to check it out. The Fogerty video works fine, but when I tried to access the cookbook, it took me back to the Shop homepage. I accessed the Stall with no trouble, and left the Boss a short note there. I accessed Jimmy's site, but when I tried to enter the salon, it kicked me back to the main site. It may be because I am using IE7. We'll see.

Anyway, is that what you wanted to know?

Matthew Collier said...

I tried to go from Centerfield to Non Political Politics and then back to Centerfield, but instead it kicked me to the main Shop site.

Sorry...

BOB said...

I told folks Matthew was sharp!

Well Bob, I did whatever it was that you asked me to do just as you asked me to do it, then reported my findings that I did find exactly as I found it just as you asked me to do, however you may have misunderstood the report that I reported to you just as you asked for said report to be reported because I reported those findings in a manner dissimilar to the usual manner in which I usually use, but to make a long story short--what you asked about performed as expected although not clearly relayed as expected by me to you ...

Anonymous said...

Anyhow, that special features thing in Centerfield ain't sending folks where they are supposed to go ... but have to use a simple link until it's fixed ...

BOB said...

Thanks Matt!

Yes, that's what I wanted to know ... and, odd as it may have seemed, that's perzactly what it was supposed to do!

I have your address ... just answer one easy question and the prize is yours to do with as you will ... have it framed for your den, auction it off on Ebay, or swap it for a virtual T-Shirt from the AJC ... Jimmy and I each won one of those and they're pretty nice, my man!

The question ... "why?"

Yes, that's always my question!

I do have another question but it won't have no bearing on your winning the prize! You said ... "I accessed Jimmy's site, but when I tried to enter the salon, it kicked me back to the main site" ... the question is, "how did you access Jimmy's site?" ... it's supposed to be a secret, not even I can find it!

BOB said...

Okay, time's up Matt!

The reasons behind the Shop's Special Features and how they're handled are many ... they evolved along with the features themselves.

One thing though, they're all part of the Old Barbershop ... like sections in a newspaper or shops in a mall.

For a variety of reasons, some technical ... some not ... we gave of our Features distinct addresses like http://www.thoughtsfromcenterfield.com so that folks could go directly to the Features of their choice ... and many did, though few commented!

Thing was, we wanted everybody to come through the front door. That's the "Why" ... the test shows that we can give each feature its own address but allow access only through the main Shop. It won't stay the way it is, ... that was just a test ... once inside they will be able to go from feature to feature as before.

The exception will be super popular, broad appeal Features like SJA's Stall where direct access will be allowed but even there, those patrons will have to go through the Shop's lobby to get to the other features ... though all will have direct access to the General Discussion Area.

The Face Lift will be a bit like our earlier test drives.

One last thing ... ain't no way we're going to bore these poor people to death with all this site management stuff going on in the Discussion Area ... we'll have a second, private discussion area for that .... just as soon as I can remember how I did the first one!

Matthew Collier said...

Bob, you sent me a question at 1:30 a.m. and expected me to see it? That's a good one! :)

I was spending some quality time with my pillow at 1:30. Sorry, my friend.

And I really like the idea of having to go through the Shop as a lobby into the individual features. That way, more people are exposed to the other features on the site. Kudos!

The fact that both parents (Dartmouth grads both) are still together and heavily involved in raising him right (as my paw paw would say) helps greatly in his maturity. I look forward to many years of dominating play!

Wasn't it appropriate that he catch the first pitch from Henry Aaron, and then be met in the dugout following his homer by Chipper Jones. A legend from the 1970s, a legend from the 1990s and 2000s, and who knows? We may be looking at the next great star to hit Atlanta.

jimmy smith was not always a journalist. now, though, jimmy smith is known on at least this blog as "journalist jimmy smith". that creates journalistic pressures for jimmy smith when posting here. journalists have to use here instead of hear, or hear instead of here. poll instead of pole, or pole instead of poll. there is much confusion with the proper use of there, their, and the hardly used, they're - almost never see they're on a baseball blog. moron and maroon seem interchangeable. lose and loose and loser and looser can be troublesome. forget about ann, anne, an, and, and idiot. journalists like jimmy smith must be careful. one of jimmy smith's favorites, though, remains prima donna and pre-madonna. too many pre-madonnas according to one blogger. must have been talking about sja, bob, and jimmy smith.

Well Bob, as a matter of fact, I've been contemplating writing a piece on Massey and others like it, but got too angry and had insufficient energy to do so ... does that give you a bit of an idea as to my opinion of Massey ... it was the coal operator's and owner's greed and lack of concern for those individuals who worked for them under unbelievably unsafe and inhuman conditions in order to secure hefty profit margins on their bottom lines ... which subsequently brought about the advent of John L. Well, a couple of articles I read talked of what smelled like political corruption to me ... and some said this Massey mine had $382,000 levied against last year, if I read it correctly.

How many violations would that represent?

Massey is huge ... obviously heavily involved in interstate commerce ... were those state or federal violations?

If there were very few violation instances, you wouldn't think there would be the clamor ... and if there`were many, you'd expect much higher amounts in fines being levied.

They talked about Massey's profit margins being the highest, or among the highest in the industry.

I'm strongly opposed to federal involvement but I think energy is so important to our future that maybe it's time to seriously consider federal regulation, if not nationalization, of the coal and oil resources, at least until the utilization of alternative sources can be effected

I strongly oppose unions but I also oppose practices that expose workers to unnecessary health/safety risks ... fines are in no way the answer ... never.

Would it not be better to provide that those companies not meeting the minimum codes be forced into reorganization, with those responsible for such failures being subject to criminal prosecution where appropriate ... with lifetime exclusion from future involvement in the industry.

Of course *I really have only my felolings, no real plane of reference

BOB said...

It's over 4096 characters ... here's the first part

Hello all! The annual rebirth of baseball's Phoenix is over and the games have begun ... some will remember me as Bob, journalist, others not ...

I just posted this on the AJC's Beat Blog ... submitting it here too for those who remember Carol and/or were among those who gave us the support that meant so very, very much.

We buried my wife Carol two weeks ago, come Thursday ... though not an active participant, she enjoyed and closely followed the AJC Beat Blog and its many characters, especially Jimmy Smith, Lew, Carolina Lady, TennPaul, Coach, SSIscribe, HK and David O'B. Of course she read the stuff I wrote too, though of Bob, journalist, she often said "you're a crazy person ... that's not you ... why can't you just be yourself like everybody else?!" However, she strongly disliked the crudeness and boorishness opposed by the character. In truth, the values of my Bob, journalist character were based primarily om Mamma, Daddy and Carol, though the convoluted syntax and abuse of the English language were of my own invention.

I got the last laugh, sorta ... masks are relatively transparent to discerning eyes like hers ... and she rather quickly came to realize that indeed many were not what they first seemed or would have had you believe. The much maligned and misunderstood Southern Jackass became her very best friend ... she thought him to be the best Jack a Jenny could have and truly a most gifted writer with a big heart and a true friend ... a bit different from her first impression! He made us feel special and provided much cherished laughter, as did journalist Jimmy Smith.

"Why can't everybody just be themselves, like you" ... she'd say ... and laugh, adding ... "and me"

Funny stuff ... she was unique but, truth and sincerity described her best, methinks, along with caring.

Then came the early hours emergency trip to Vanderbilt and the Stage 4 Cancer diagnosis ... the cancer was advanced, and in the blood stream. Conventional wisdom was ... terminal ... possibly as little as two weeks with an outside chance of a year ... they advised against surgery or other significant treatment. Fortunately, two of the doctors offered some hope for a better outcome and Carol elected to have surgery and fight the good fight ... and she did!!

BOB said...

And here's the rest ...

I share this because of the importance of the many, many expressions of concern and support, primarily in the form of sincere well wishes and prayers ... even from them what forgot. It was truly overwhelming and humbling ... we collected and saved each and every one! We had broad based and widespread support, stretching well beyond our borders .. but, none was more important than that tremendous initial outpouring of support from the blog's neighborhood!

Time changes most everything and I know that many have moved but it was then a very special place, magical. Those expressions od friendship and support times have changed certainly it was an enabling contributor to her resolve and courage, especially at that critical time during those early, confusing days. There's no effective way to express how important that was to us ... the lasting effect it had, or how much it was appreciated! Neither it nor those who so did will never be forgotten

The end was heartbreaking and it will be some time before it all truly sinks in, but we had a wonderful 32 additional months together ... mostly her taking care of me, truth be known ... and, that resolve and courage never waned, it was always "thumbs up!"

She liked the Braves ... Wrigley Field better than The TED ... bedridden since mid December, she watched the Winter Olympics in BC, one of our favorite places, and listened to the Braves' Spring Training games in those final weeks.

She liked to speak her mind and she had one of the best, methinks ... at SJA's behest, Carol became an active member of our blog, "The Old Barbershop" ... running Miss Carol's Salon and writing several stories for the Shop ... it was good therapy, more for us than for her, methinks. The Shop's been mostly in abeyance during these last few months, except for SJA's Stall and is now scheduled for a much needed face lift but you're invited to visit www.carolssalon.com to see a sample of her efforts ... she wasn't really a writer but she gave it her all! Good stuff!! Her memory was truly remarkable and she had so many stories she wanted to tell ...

Elvis is leaving the building ... She wanted you to know, and I know she'd want me to close with a sincere ... thank you all ... for her, and for me!

Thumbs Up!

Bob

I know, I know ... they're leading the league in team batting average ... have the highest OPS too ... and rank number one in the Major Leagues when hitting with runners in scoring position ... big deal ... they rank last in home runs!

For them what ain't been listening or watching, as the case may be ... Atlanta relievers have yet to give up a run, not nary a one!

BOB said...

Dr. Jimmy Smith, you are indeed very wise but from where I come, it's generally thought that there is no homer worth more than an additional run would have been in the first 12 innings of a thirteen inning affair ... but remember, Bobby gets the big bucks because the fans love him ... that's baseball!

Of course a 2 run homer, when given up in the ninth by your closer, when leading by 2, is pretty good too ... just not for you.

The Grinch said...

Greetings, gentlemen! Wow, this place looks quite different indeed since the last time I visited. I trust I see you all well? Bob, I heard the news and hope you will accept my sincerest condolences. You're a fine fellow and will not want for friendship or support, including my own.

I must apologize for not coming around more often, and for sleeping late on Easter Sunday, and leaving the seat up, and tweaking Chipper's oblique. My flaws are legion. Like Bobby's, only different. I must tell you all that I was present on opening day, and the franchise appeared to undergo a complete re-emergence. It's a shame now to see such a well constructed team (given the budget limitations) squander victories with poor plate discipline. I was also at spring training for a week, and the fundamentals looked sound. What's causing the disconnect?

I still believe the Braves are the team to beat in the East and will win 92-95 games barring serious injuries. I only wish Chipper's contract had a clause in it forcing him to do basic stretching before every game; I'm roughly the same age he is and have never strained an oblique in my entire life. I'm almost always out of shape and yet still play pick up sports (basketball, baseball, softball, football) and never stretch. How does this man manage to injure himself in ways that I can't even do when I try?

The Grinch said...

I also firmly believe Peter Moylan should sue for having to pitch more than Hoss Radburn. Absolutely no reason for that, especially with such a solid bullpen otherwise.

We've had pretty good pitching the first four games, starting and relieving.

In the first one, Lowe didn't really pitch that well, giving up 5 runs in six, but the much lauded and vaunted offensive machine sparkled, scoring 16 runs and they got three perfect innings from their relievers.

Everybody went out and bought the AJC so that they could read about it and start their scrapbooks, methinks!

Escobar 2-5 .400
Heyward 2-5 .400
McLouth 1-3 .333
Infante 0-1 .000

Jason Heyward hit it out in his first MLB at bat ... shades of young Jordan Shaffer!

Exactly what we expected!

Since Opening Day ... 1-2

Cabrera 2-13 .154
Prado 8-12 .667
Jones 1-5 .200

Glaus 4-1 .286
Escobar 2-12 .167
Heyward 1-12 .083

Old Hoss did pitch a lot, especially one season ... was a good closer, finished what he started!

Jokes aside, the team does look pretty good, sans too many errors, and they should win the East, methinks.

SJA told me that Chipper's problem was that he was old ... I told him I wished I was that old! Truth be known, my son wishes he was that old too!

With the sound running through my head
Drowned out way out in the crowd
and the crowd goes singing

My people are the misfits
The ones that don't fit in
With the smile I know it comes within
I can feel you in the corners laughing when the lightings low

They say
Tick tick. tell me where the time goes
Oh life, you know it moves much too slow
Tick tick tell me where the time goes
Those are the ones for me
Those are the ones for me
The misfits, the freaks, the enemy, you and me
Those are the ones for me
Those are the ones for me
The misfits, the freaks, the enemy, you and me

Hi, I am also a spinster and I hope I'm not too late. I have always wanted to blog with other spinsters and with misfits, too (that's my adventurous side).

I would be interested in meeting Grinch! Is he as limber as it sounds? Old guys like that usually break instead of bend.

The life of a spinster can get pretty monotonous and that is why I am so glad I happened upon this blog. There has always been a need for a Spinster Blog and I feel that itch being scratched right here.

I, too, remember the butterflies and I remember the dragonflies and why can't the Braves produce sacrifice flys? There's more to a spinster than meets the eye.

The Grinch said...

Oh dear! I seem to have brought someone along with me from a different blog! There must be a commercial break on Fox News right now...

SJA, I hate to agree with someone who thinks someone my age is old, but in this case I fear it's true. When at Disney, I watched chipper walk from third base to the indoor batting cages (right outside the left field fence, maybe 100-150 feet away). It took him about 20 minutes. He looked like a cross between Fred Sanford and Herman Munster, just staring at the ground as he inched along. I thought to myself "Self, I'm glad that Hinske fellow is making good contact."

BOB said...

I'm not Grinch's age but I do remember Red Foxx passing close by me at the tables, more than once ... replete with dark glasses, George Raft shoes, silk suit and big cigar ... a babe on both arms and his entourage of thug looking bodyguards following close at hand. In a word, scary. He seemed to be all business ... hard looking and hard language, very hard!

Them babes weren't spinsters, that's for sure ... more Tiger's type, methinks.

BOB said...

"Now, Bob, if you don't clean up your act, you are out of here. Wait, this is not my blog. I will start a blog and then throw you out. Take that!" ... sounds familiar, now don't it?!

I've been thrown out by some of the bast, and some not so good ... one more ain't gonna make much difference so take your best shot!

Ladies what are good at spinning most any kind of yarn are always welcome here ... but we don't cotton to them what is just good at pulling wool, one is too many.

"I remember when I was a little girl" ... now, that's a good yarn ... young, maybe.

BOB said...

Well, before I get thrown out, let me share what I noticed under the category of "Noteworthy" in the preview of today's match up with the Giants ...

"When the Braves lost 2-0 in their finale against the Cubs on Thursday night, they lost a 2-0 game on two solo homers for the first time since Aug. 24, 1979" ...

Noteworthy? Whatever works for you but it sounds to me like nothing was worthy so they searched hard to find something to say. Time changes most everything ... back in 1979, most folks would have called that filler!

Later ...

Bob, calm down my man ... don't you remember? ... this is your blog, nobody can throw you out -- but you!

The Old Barbershop has but one rule ... and that rule is applied equally and fairly to all ... unlike some places, we maintain a level playing field and play no favorites ... no one is above the law!

That rule states ... "if you can't behave, use profanity, pick fights or spit on the floor you will politely be shown the door" ... --sja

Your answer is right there ... politely!!

Well, so this is it. A spinster blog at last! How did a Vermont spinster find her way here? I do wonder is she can draw, I knew an artist from there once. Talented but a bit crabby when provoked. Sure would be good to have that blogger blogging here.

Turtledoves work best in pairs and pears are great for salads.

Go Braves!

Here's a shout out to all you spinsters. I think we should have a shawl contest much like the tee shirt contests over on that other blog. Winner gets a shawl. Spinsters can always use another shawl. Speaking of Chipper, what is wrong with that boy? Maybe somebody could draw him a new oblique. Spinsters get sore, too, but we never come out of the game.

Grasshoppers are hopping and spinsters are shopping, always shopping for a good shawl.

Go Braves!

If we knit the shawl ... they will come!

journalist jimmy smith said...

spinsters are taking over the blog! look what they have done to the home page! soon, they will kick the regulars out.

jimmy smith has an uneasy feeling about blogging with spinsters.

blogging with grinch seems like old times but those spinsters are creepy. sometimes a spinster will turn on a journalist and there's not much a journalist can do about it.

when jimmy smith was growing up there was a ugandan spinster that lived across the street from jumbo smith, mumbo smith, and young jimmy smith. that spinster would sit on the front porch and spit snuff over the banisters. sometimes little children would get splattered like bloggers get splattered when they blog with spinsters. blogger beware!

Anonymous said...

Maybe we should make this a "no spinster zone" ...

BOB said...

A shawl for the Stall ... he's sure to win ... best spinster in these parts, exceptin' maybe Uncle Virgil but he's still on probation for having spit on the floor and is barred from the competition!

Besides, now that he's involved with that widow woman VanMeter, he has no time for no spinster foolishness ...

Uncle Virgil is truly my favorite cousin ... that'll probably confuse you dumb yankees but not any true sons of the Confederacy.

Virgil is the only man alive who could enjoy Bill Buckley without using no dictionary ... amazing!

It always upset him that Bill talked so slow, especially for a yankee ... but he didn't hold it against him ... told me Bill did that on purpose so folks could look up the words without falling behind.

Why is everybody picking on Larry Jones? For goodness sakes, he's only missed 2 games so far ... for the entire season! I checked and he's been in all the rest, every one!

The media seem to think we're cursed and will lose tonight ... ain't no way we're gonna lose, well ... unless they score more runs than us and Bobby says we can't do anything about that, "that's just baseball!" .

BOB said...

I don't think that was no spinster ... looked a lot like the dowager VanMeter, looking for Virgil and checking us out!

BOB said...

Houston, we have a problem ... seriously!

We have lost the sidebar html/javascript widget containing the John Fogerty Centerfield picture and video ... and we have no backup.

Not sure what happened but I don't believe no rumors that the Grinch stole it ... too bust stuffing his face with his purloined Easter Eggs, methinks.

We may be able to get part of it back with your help ... our only hope!!

Here's how ... if you have a pc (i.e. use windows), your computer has a folder named "Temporary Internet Files" ... containing the downloaded files from your last visit to www.centerfield.com ... typically, it would be located in Document and Settings\username\Temporary Internet Files.

if you go there while not connected to the Internet and select it, it will show it in the browser ... then under "view" select page source and copy the source file ... save that file as centerfield.txt and email it to me at bob.oldbarbershop@gmail.com.

That's doesn't solve the problem but it would really help me to so do, methinks!

If you do find the files and don't quite know what to do next, let me know and I'll try to walk you through it ... should be easy.

Warning, don't visit Centerfield before doing this or the files we need will be replaced with the current files which do not have the lost code.

Thanks!

Matthew Collier said...

Wow, a lot going on! I think I recognize a certain accomplished Vermont artist on the blog, as well as the crook who stole Christmas-welcome to both of you!

We are being overrun by spinsters as well...oh, the humanity! Welcome anyway, ladies!

Bob, I can't find the Centerfield file in my Temporary Internet Files. Would it help for me to find the video on YouTube again, and e-mail you the link?

Chipper is hurt again. I wonder how his health insurance is different now that our fearless leader has force-fed us this healthcare bill...sorry, won't go further, especially since a certain old anthem was being sung in the shop a few hours ago.

And in the middle of all this, the Braves won tonight! I know because I watched it. I saved up Christmas money, switched to DirectTV, and bought the Extra Innings package. I'll be able to watch more Braves baseball this year than at any time since Granddaddy passed in 1997. There'll be a whole lotta choppin' goin' on around here!

And I bought a Braves cell phone case today, just to aggrevate our baseball team's head coach (he's a Cardinals fan).

G'night all!

BOB said...

Thanks Matt but methinks the problem's solved ... sorta. It ain't quite the same but better than nothing ... though it's after four here as it is there!

The Boss told me he has been reviewing your expense account and keeps saying things like "Well, I think it would be nice to have at least one 2010 Centerfield entry in before the end of the season, my man ... funny stuff like that!

I sent him some of his favorite sweet feed and some fresh young carrots to calm him down before suggesting maybe one of the spinsters could try their hand but that trick didn't work none too well ... "We need to serve them something hard hitting, full of cider that'll stir the fans up and get a reaction, not tea and crumpets ... praising Bobby and Larry, and stuff like that! They're truly welcome, you know that but next thing we know, they'll want pink curtains on all the windows" ... thought he was going to spit!

Jimmy's debut in Centerfield was sensational, like Schafer and Heyward, he his a homerun in his first trip to the plate so you might impose upon him to treat us to some more of the same ... he knows his baseball and ain't afraid to tell it like it is and stir things up.

You might ask Grinch but don't scare him off, it took a long time to get him here ...

Seems to me that those are your best options ... the spinsters want a contest, you could offer them one ... let them each submit entries and you select the ones we'll use. I've still got some Tommy Hawk Pops you could use for prizes.

The Spinsters, Jimmy Smith, Grinch ... and don't forget Chopper who's already on the payroll with a huge expense account ... my guess is that he's probably willing to help out busy preachers what love their kids and win the Nobel Prize for best apologies.

As usual, this comment will self destruct in 20 seconds and I'll disavow any knowledge of anything about it ... but I know you'll somehow git'er did ... the how is up to you!

Were I you, full of passion and energy ... and could type Clark Kent fast ... I'd just pay the two dollars and whip something out in 10 minutes or so!

It's now almost six ... shows why that wouldn't work for me!

Well, it was well past my bed time when the game was over ... still is ... nite!

Matthew Collier said...

Bob, if you want a Centerfield, a Centerfield you will get. I will impose a Monday night at midnight deadline for myself. The story will include Heyward, Chipper, and Hank Aaron, given in random order.

Bob, if you wish to remain on this blog, I'll not want to see you using the word, "methinks". Likewise, Jimmy Smith, there will be no use of "booger". SJA, there are numerous bans for you and you will know what they are.

Also talked to Chipper, Martin Prado, Hanson, Bobby Dews and Frank Wren.

Got autographed baseballs from Hank Aaron, Jimy Williams and Medlen. It was fun -especially since I can now walk more appreciable distances with a minimum of difficulty.

You have to give Bobby credit, having Lowe pitch before KK ... Derek would have freaked and been embarrassed had he been matched against The Freak!

Speaking of our much heralded offense ... of our eight players with more than 10 at bats, Prado leads the way at .600 (12/20), followed not too closely by the rookie Heyward at .300 (6/20).

Glaus rounds out the top three at .238 (5/21), which is pretty good, when compared to the rest of this highly touted and vaunted group.

Infante 3/13 .231

McCann 3/13 .231

Escobar 5/22 .227

McLouth 2/13 .154

Cabrera 3/21 .143

Of course, that doesn't include Chipper and Matt who haven't enough official at bats to qualify ... they're both at .222 (2/9) which is better than either McLouth or Cabrera, our would be leadoff men!

Fans should stay off Chipper's back ... it's sore too, and goodness, he's only missed 4 games this season, if he doesn't play tonight!

Plum. I'd like to see the centerfield background done in a plum. Now that the spinsters outnumber the regulars here I think we should have a say-so about the colors used and maybe some of the graphics, too. I see no reason for a photo of Erin Andrews on here. Replace her with a spinster. Have a nice day!

The Grinch said...

My oh my. A quality start by our 5th starter, and all the offense is three runs of two homers. Watching Kelly Johnson and Jeff Francouer ripping it up now makes me think Pendleton is at least as much if not more responsible for our wasted opportunities as Bobby. I sincerely hope there's a house cleaning after this season so we can take advantage of our excellent scouting. McDowell and Perez are the only two who deserve to stay. And whoever's in charge of strength and conditioning should be fired immediately and replaced by a Yogi.

Yes, a Yogi. Chipper will learn how to stretch while the Yogi eats all the club sandwiches (pun intended). Jeff Porter must remain in charge of Booboo, however. :-P

At least a spinster won't post something three times. Spinsters are frugal. A spinster would never allow a $15 million player to sit out with a sore whatever.

I am pretty sure a spinster could drive in a run if it meant the ballgame. These early losses count as much as the inevitable ones later on. I have not forgiven the team for finishing last season in third instead of second by losing the last 6 at home and being swept by the lowly Nationals. A team with a little more pride would have done better.

Some of my spinster friends are learning about this blog and may start hanging out.

I am pretty sure if Chipper spotted a Yogi he would shoot him with a high powered weapon, skin him, sign him, and sell him to an unsuspecting and adoring little fan. Go Braves!

Grinch, it's okay to tell people when to laugh here in the shop ... but not required ... most of us like folks to make up their own minds, just so long as we're all in agreement ... that's the main thing!

I think most would agree that TP has been woefully ineffective and his efforts counterproductive ... almost criminal ... I have never been able to figure out who it is on which he has pictures.

Some thinking of themselves as expert have long suggested that TP was being groomed as Bobby's replacement so as to become the Braves' first Black Manager ... that horse may have died, maybe not.

Word now on the street is that Jason Heyward will replace Bobby ... don't laugh, anything would be better than TP ... Gene Mauch managed while playing Second base in Atlanta, 1953 methinks!

He did a fine job ... was better than Bobby at fussin' with umpires and getting thrown out of games ... his face always turned redder than a beet!

The fans, players, and the media all love young Jason ... After last night's fielding faux pas, Mark Bowman was quick to the rescue ... I don't remember the exact wording of the secondary headline before being later changed ... but roughly ... "Heyward's error yields unearned run ... but he himself with later blast!"

Bowman's a piece of work, always fun to read ... but that was bad, even for him!

Down by four with two out and nobody on in the ninth, he redeemed himself with a solo homerun ... really, really bad.

Bowman, your and idiot, my man

Gaudy numbers, that's for sure!!

Fans should stay off Chipper's back ... it's sore too, and goodness, he's still only missed 4 games this season!

Like I said, not much has changed ... I laughed when Chipper said that the team was in trouble when he went 0-fer or didn't play ... now, I'm not so sure!

some bloggers from other blogs are taking notice of the appearance of the legendary grinch on these pages. some will remember grinch is a sometimes roof sitter with a gun in hand. could be invited to the double dime with those credentials.

I read this and you should, too, and then you wouldn't make fun of cosmetologists on this horrible blog. - Trixie

"Cosmetologists help their clients improve on or acquire a certain look with the right hairstyle and hair coloring, manicured nails, and either a properly trimmed beard or carefully chosen makeup, depending on your testosterone and estrogen levels. Cosmetologists also shampoo, cut, color, and style hair and advise clients on proper hair care between appointments. They add permanent waves or straighten hair in addition to giving manicures, facials, and scalp treatments and caring for and styling wigs. This is a profession that requires considerable tact and diplomacy in dealing with patrons. Cosmetologists are people-oriented and must be able to inspire the confidence of those they service. With an emphasis on personalized care and services, cosmetologists must understand the individual characteristics of their clients to be able to choose the hairstyles and makeup colors and tones that are uniquely suited to them. One New York City stylist remarked, “It’s simply important to get to know and understand your clients . . . their likes and dislikes . . . and you work with that, finding styles that enhance aspects of their personality.” The move toward more personalized care and services means that cosmetologists with charm, good communication skills, and the ability to inspire trust in their clients will be very successful. For cosmetologists who work in teams where each member has her own specialty—hair, nails, makeup, etc.—interpersonal skills are crucial for success. Constantly updated skills in new hair treatments and techniques give the ambitious cosmetologist the edge. Many cosmetologists regularly attend classes to improve their trade. Cosmetologists must keep on top of the latest styles and trends in hair fashion and beauty techniques. If you knew next year’s hot hairstyle, you’d be a hit. If you created next year’s hot hairstyle, you’d be a star. The hours in the field are flexible, with some professionals working nine to five, others working nights, and some working only weekends. What’s not flexible is the considerable amount of time cosmetologists spend on their feet. Professionals are also exposed to hair and nail chemicals that could possibly negatively affect their health."

That pretty much sums it up and we are nothing like those smelly old spinsters. - Trixie

Blogging here is a real joy. Lew and Grinch are two of my favorite men and having them here now closes the deal for this spinster.

I understand Bob has some photos of Lew at spring training. Those could prove useful.

Matthew seems like a nice young man. What is he doing with this crowd? I remember SJA from that other blog and he was hard to get along with. Jimmy Smith is just and idiot. Soon, this will be a spinster blog and we will start throwing you off here one by one.

Spinsters are that way.

APOLOGIES FOR THE INCONVENIENCE caused by the problem with the code driving the GDA's link navigation ... hopefully, things will return to it's usual albeit abbey normal state.

When restored, we will switch to a new comments/discussion table ... best to read and/or reread the current comments so as to be up to date when it occurs.

Hear's a little Blood, Sweat & Tears for all you blog spinsters -- "Spinning Wheel" --

What goes up must come down
spinning wheel got to go round
Talking about your troubles it's a crying sin
Ride a painted pony
Let the spinning wheel spin

You got no money, and you, you got no home
Spinning wheel all alone
Talking about your troubles and you, you never learn
Ride a painted pony
let the spinning wheel turn

Did you find a directing sign
on the straight and narrow highway?
Would you mind a reflecting sign
Just let it shine within your mind
And show you the colours that are real

Someone is waiting just for you
spinning wheel is spinning true
Drop all your troubles, by the river side
Catch a painted pony
On the spinning wheel ride

Someone is waiting just for you
spinning wheel is spinning true
Drop all your troubles, by the river side
Ride a painted pony
Let the spinning wheel fly
