Great job with the new site -- maybe it can be linked to other political and historical discussion sites so more people can discover it. Keep up the good work!

Burning a flag is something I would never do, but it is a form of expression which should be allowed. Banning the right to do so is just one less freedom we have.

Thanks for the comment James ...

It's unfortunate that we have a Bill Of Rights ... not unfortunate that we have those freedoms but that there is a numbered list.

Freedom is what it's about but I would have preferred a more general framework ... but no, they wouldn't listen to me ... let's make a list they said ... and they did!

I don't personally believe in unbridled freedom of expression ... as I think it reasonable to expect that folks are held accountable for their actions.

Daddy taught me "If it's right, do it ... if it's not don't ... no if's, no ands, no buts!"

The freedom to object, to protest those things which we believe are wrong is fundamental and must be forever preserved if we are to remain free, assuming that we are ... but we must never treat it as an entitlement ... it is a privilege, in that we must be held accountable for our actions and not be allowed free passage to do as we please without due regard to the means relative to the end.

The proposed amendment, as I understand it, simply gives Congress the right to prohibit desecration of the flag ... the very fact that we as a people generally find such behavior repugnant and despicable, reserved for the simple minded, the rabble and the dregs of society ... strongly suggests that it is an ineffective means of protest ... more an action of self indulgence than anything else, methinks.

Disallowing behavior that society finds truly disreputable would not seem to truly infringe upon our freedom to express ourselves in protest.

It makes no more sense to me to allow desecration of the flag than it would to allow protesters to run naked in the streets with blatant disregard for propriety and the feelings of others.

I believe too that the level of freedom that can be reasonably afforded the people by the government is directly related to the trust that can be placed in them to appropriately behave and govern themselves.

Well, if it isn't then I think it should ... and from that perspective, those who would desecrate our flag, and others of that ilk are among those most responsible for the limitations placed on our freedoms.

Daddy also said, "Placing locks on doors isn't going to keep the real crocks out, but it will deter honest folks that might be otherwise tempted."

It's a sad state that so many citizens both young and old, fail to be involved in the one privilege everyone should hold dear to their heart. The right to vote. Not just in the national elections but in their state and county elections that are, if not more, are just as equally important as the presidential election. Meaningful change starts at the grass roots level, at home. If the citizenry fails to elect competent state, county and their respective federal officials we are in trouble. And we are in trouble. Why are these people not participating? Is it that they are to tired, to broke, to disillusioned by the lack of competent leadership. Do they feel that they have been betrayed, manipulated and lied to for too many years? If the latter is the case, just who is responsible for their attitude? Is it the fault of all of the self interested politicians that have managed to beg, buy and steal their way into these positions of influence with their millions, no, billions of dollars worth of 30 second campaign ads paid for by too many self motivated deep pocketed businesses that don't give a hoot about you or me. Their motivation is money and money rules the day. Are they put off because our leadership has bled the citizenry of their hard earned incomes, through long seemingly meaningless at this point, wars. Remember Korea and Vietnam? Given billions of dollars to corrupt immoral governments all over the world trying to buy their favor just to have it siphoned of by these immoral corrupt foreign governments? No! It's our fault for letting them do it.

Well heck, why do I keep ranting on and on with this? What's the use in giving a damn any more. I can't make a difference any way.

Well Charles ... you just did ... make a difference! There's a lot wrong ... increasing awareness is a vital first step.

In my view, good government can only be achieved from the bottom up ... same as you, methinks. The answers lie not with the Democrats, Republicans ... or them what drink tea! We have to eliminate parties and demand of those we select, that they work together in they reason is the best interest of the whole ... good people make good government ... that's the long and short!

Thanks for the comment!! Joining in the discussion ... you never know where it will take us ... but you do know that if you don't then you won't ... make a difference!

Congress and President Obama have collaborated in one of the world’s greatest swindles, all based on a combination of smoke and lies.

The illusion that the debt ceiling will be raised in concert with the same sized spending cuts is all smoke. The debt ceiling rises in one complete jump, while cuts are spread over 10 years. This means spending next year will be allowed to increase by $1.2 trillion while budget cuts are only one-tenth that amount, or $120 billion. This keeps us in the same financial danger we are facing right now.

By the way, does anyone really think the cuts of the first year, inadequate as they are, will be repeated the next year, and the next, and the next, etc.? Sorry, Congress has never worked that way and there’s no reason to expect this to change.

President Obama said that this agreement will bring U.S. spending to "the lowest level of domestic spending since Dwight Eisenhower was president" in the 1950s. This is a complete lie. The Congressional Budget Office reports the 2010 and 2011 budgets, as measured in inflation-adjusted dollars, are the highest since 1945, the last year of World War II. It also reports that as a percentage of what we as a nation produce (that is, the U.S. Gross Domestic Product), the budgets of 2009, 2010, and 2011 are higher than any budget since 1946.

The President also stated, “And it will allow us to lift the cloud of debt and uncertainty" that has hung above the United States for weeks. How can this be when the debt in this agreement continues the death spiral upwards with no clear solution in place. The new congressional committee proposed in the agreement would have until the end of November to recommend $1.8 trillion or more in deficit cuts, targeting benefit programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, or overhauling the tax code. Well, almost every President since Eisenhower has commissioned such a committee. Every recommendation from these committees has included heavy cuts in spending, overhaul of the way government functions, and simplification of the tax code. In every case these committee recommendations have been largely ignored. What makes anyone think things will be different this time?

With this agreement, President Obama has flim-flammed Congress, and both parties and Congress have ignored the wishes of the American people as expressed in the recent Congressional elections. Because it flies in the face of economic reality, this agreement is not a solution but a postponment. With this agreement, we, the people of the United States, will eventually reap the whirlwind of economic collapse.

If the President and politicians feel that Entitlements need to be reduced in order to reduce the debt and obtain a balanced budget; then let's start with Congresses Entitlements--both House and Senate members--we cannot afford them. They need to pay their own way just like the rest of us.

I've been standing on the sidelines too long. Now it's time to make a choice, one way or the other, and become involved to some degree. I find myself leaning, and as time goes on, it will unravel more, and I can make more meaningful posts.

Can you please sign my petition? http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/for-mitt-romney-barack-obama-to-ask-me-a-science/

I am asking Mitt Romney and Barack Obama to ask me a science question and/or appear in one of my science videos.

I am 13 years old and have a website called Flydoodle Science. Anyone can ask me a science question and I answer it for them in a video. I have sent an email to both Romney and Obama. Romney's campaign said he does not have the time and I have not heard back from Obama's campaign yet. I know that they are both super busy right now but I am hoping that they can make some time to support science and kids.

I am trying to do something positive and show everyone just how awesome science is. It would be a dream come true if both Romney and Obama showed their support for not only what I am doing, but also for all the kids out there who are trying to do great things.
